Description
The knee is the largest joint in the body, functioning like a hinge. It is made up of three main bony components: the distal end of the femur (thigh bone), the proximal end of the tibia (shin bone), and the patella (kneecap).
The knee joint plays a crucial role in controlling movement, supporting body weight, and distributing load, making it essential for daily activities.
Frequent impact or injury to the knee, such as fractures or cartilage damage, can lead to joint degeneration. This is especially true for individuals over the age of 45, as the risk of knee osteoarthritis increases with age. However, knee degeneration is no longer limited to the elderly.
If you experience knee pain while climbing stairs, walking, or even standing, this is an early warning sign. Additionally, stiffness or tightness in the knee that restricts movement indicates the onset of knee joint degeneration.
At the onset of symptoms, it is important to consult a doctor. Initially, the doctor may recommend reducing knee strain, consuming joint-nourishing foods, or prescribe pain relievers combined with warm compresses for symptom relief. If symptoms persist, the doctor will evaluate whether surgical intervention is necessary.
For patients with severe knee degeneration that cannot be managed through conservative treatments, total knee replacement surgery may be performed. This involves removing the damaged cartilage and replacing it with an artificial joint. After surgery, patients can typically regain normal knee function and bear weight on the joint as usual.
