Description
The tonsils are glands involved in the immune system and can be found in various locations, with the most noticeable positions being on either side of the oral cavity, at the base of the tongue, and in the nasal cavity.
The tonsils serve as the first line of defense against pathogens in the body. The most common cause of tonsillitis is viral infection, followed by bacterial and fungal infections.
Initial symptoms of tonsillitis include a sore throat when swallowing food, liquids, or saliva, bad breath, and potential pain radiating from the throat to the ears. In some cases, patients may experience a high or low fever, depending on the type of infection. Importantly, when the tonsils become inflamed, they will swell on both sides.
Tonsillitis can be contagious. If an individual receives antibiotics but continues to experience chronic inflammation or if the tonsils enlarge to the point of obstructing the airway, a physician may recommend a tonsillectomy.
