Who should be examined?
- Women with over 40 years of age should undertake an annual mammogram test.
- Women with questionable symptoms, i.e., detectable lump in the breast, pain, abnormal liquid especially that with red-colour coming out of a nipple, or chronic wound around the nipple.
- Women with breast or ovary cancer history among their direct family members.
- Women who had their period started at an age lower than 11 years old or have menopause at an age over 55 years old.
- Women who bear no children and have never done any breast-feeding.
- Consumption of birth control pills for a long period of time.
Why the digital mammography performs a better job in detecting breast cancer than the old-style one?
- Images from the digital mammogram machine are very precise, thus helping doctors to differentiate normal breast tissues from other anomalies, such as, calcium, lumps, quite clearly.
- The digital mammography images help the physicians to take decision on how to treat the patient more rapidly and accurately.
How to prepare yourself for mammography?
- On the actual day of the mammography, it is advisable for patients to refrain from using talc, deodorants or body lotion around the armpits and the breasts as some chemical substances of these products can look like calcium stones in the mammography image.
Mammography should be done one week after the first day of the period so as to avoid any negative effect on women with possible pregnancy and to reduce breast pain during the mammogram.
