Sports Medicine Clinic
People nowadays pay more attention to their health and hence physical
exercises which could be either recreational, boosting good health, or even for
competition. As a result, more and more reported injuries from either the exercises
or work have ensued. These injuries could happen as much in young people as in
the elderly and could take place in either one of these forms: acute injuries,
overused injuries (injury that occurs to a specific organ of the body which has been
overused for a long period of time), or systemic injuries.

Risk factors of the said injuries are numerous but can be categorized in 2
main groups as follows:

  1. A patient’s intrinsic factors i.e., age, gender, underlying conditions,
proper training, sports skill, mental health etc.
  2. A patient’s extrinsic factors i.e., type of sports played, position in the
game, weather condition, game period, sports equipment etc.

To avoid possible injuries during the exercise, it is advised that those
interested in doing the exercise prepare themselves well and assess probable risks
from such activities by warming up the body first before the exercise and cooling it
down after the exercise to reduce the chance of injury. However, if an injury was
inevitable, proper and preliminary care is very important. The patient should then
be transferred to the right place for an appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

In providing a preliminary care to an injured patient, doctors will adhere to
the RICE protocol, that is,
R Rest: stop using the injured organ which might encompass an option of
splinting it in case that such injury is severe or deforming.
I Ice: use cold compression to mitigate the swelling, pain, inflammation and
avoid using warm compression or massage at the injured area.
C Compression: by using gauze to mitigate the swelling at the injured area,
Nevertheless, the compression must not be too tight.
E Elevation: by lifting the injured part in parallel to the heart to reduce the
swelling.

The Sports Medicine Clinic is ready to provide consultations to those
interested in doing physical exercise about the preparations and prevention of the
injuries therefrom. Moreover, the Clinic is ready to diagnose and treat those with
injuries either from the exercises or from work by means of modern and world
standard methodology to ensure our patients that they will get the most appropriate
and comprehensive care from our multidisciplinary team and that they can resume
their sports practice or work as normally as possible.

The Hospital has designated a specific area of the Hospital as an
examination room for diagnosis and treatment; a physical therapy room and a
surgery room, of which their standards meet that of the JCI.
